Proton Pass and NordPass are the two password managers we recommend most often in 2026, for different readers. Both encrypt your vault before it leaves your device, both store passkeys for free, and both come from companies whose main business is privacy or security software (Proton with Mail and VPN, Nord Security with NordVPN). So the choice does not come down to "which one is safe". It comes down to four concrete points: what the free plan lets you do, how transparent the code is, which extras you will actually use, and what you pay after the first promotional term.
This comparison is built on the two vendors' own documentation (pricing and security pages checked on 17 and 18 October 2026), their published audits, and our hands-on use of both apps. Prices are quoted in euros as displayed from France on those dates.
01 - 30-Second Verdict
- You want a free manager you will keep: Proton Pass. Unlimited devices, unlimited items, passkeys and 10 email aliases without paying.
- You want the smoothest paid experience at the lowest first-term price: NordPass Premium at 1.39 EUR/month on the 2-year plan, with the most polished autofill and desktop apps of the two.
- You care about auditable code: Proton Pass. Its clients are open source under GPL v3. NordPass clients are proprietary, even though the product is audited.
- You already pay for NordVPN or Proton Unlimited: stay in your ecosystem. Proton Unlimited includes Pass Plus; Nord bundles discount NordPass.
02 - Free Plans: The Difference That Decides Most Cases
This is where the two products diverge most, and where most readers should start.
Proton Pass Free (proton.me/pass/pricing, 18 October 2026):
- Unlimited logins, notes and credit cards
- Unlimited devices, with sync
- Passkeys (create, store, autofill)
- 10 hide-my-email aliases
- 2 vaults, sharing with 2 people
- Browser extensions, iOS, Android, desktop apps
NordPass Free (nordpass.com/plans, 17 October 2026):
- Unlimited vault entries
- Sync on one active device at a time (you can log in elsewhere, but the previous session is signed out)
- Password and passphrase generator
- Passkeys
- TOTP 2FA to protect the NordPass account
- No secure sharing, no Data Breach Scanner, no Password Health, no file attachments
In practice: a NordPass Free user with a phone and a laptop will hit the one-device wall within a day. Proton Pass Free has no such wall. If you have no intention of paying, the free plan comparison is already the verdict.
03 - Encryption, Audits and Transparency
| Criterion | Proton Pass | NordPass |
|---|---|---|
| Vault encryption | AES-256-GCM, random 32-byte key per item | XChaCha20 |
| Key protection / derivation | OpenPGP, ECC Curve25519 | Argon2id |
| Zero-knowledge | Yes | Yes |
| Independent audit | Audit reports published by Proton | Cure53 (2022), SOC 2 Type 2 |
| Bug bounty | Public programme | Nord Security programme |
| Client source code | Open source (GPL v3) | Proprietary |
| Server source code | Proprietary | Proprietary |
| Company jurisdiction | Switzerland (Proton AG) | Panama (Nord Security) |
| Account 2FA with hardware keys | Yes, FIDO2/U2F keys on every plan | TOTP apps (security keys listed for Business) |
Both designs are sound. XChaCha20 is the same family of cipher used by WireGuard and Signal; AES-256-GCM is the authenticated mode recommended for new designs. Argon2id is the modern reference for key derivation and resists GPU brute force well. Proton's OpenPGP layer is inherited from Proton Mail and has a decade of scrutiny behind it.
The difference that matters is what you can verify. With Proton Pass you can read the code of the extension and apps you run. With NordPass you rely on the Cure53 report and the SOC 2 attestation. For most users this is a philosophical difference rather than a practical risk; for people who choose software partly on auditability, it decides the match. Our is Proton Pass safe check goes deeper into Proton's model, and the NordPass review covers the Cure53 findings.
04 - 12-Criteria Comparison Table
| Criterion | Proton Pass | NordPass |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan devices | Unlimited | 1 active device |
| Free plan items | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Passkeys | Yes, free | Yes, free |
| Built-in 2FA codes (TOTP) | Pass Plus only | Not in personal plans (Business only) |
| Email aliases | 10 free, unlimited in Plus | Not in personal plans |
| Secure sharing | 2 people free, more in Plus | Premium |
| Breach monitoring | Pass Monitor, Dark Web Monitoring in Plus | Data Breach Scanner in Premium |
| Password health report | Yes | Password Health in Premium |
| File attachments | Plus | Premium |
| Emergency access | Plus | Premium |
| Desktop apps | Windows, macOS, Linux | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Money-back guarantee | 30 days | 30 days |
05 - Daily Use: Where Each One Feels Better
Autofill and polish. NordPass has the more refined autofill: suggestions appear inline, the desktop app is fast, biometric unlock is seamless on every platform. Proton Pass has caught up a lot since 2024 and its extension is now reliable, but NordPass still feels a touch smoother on Windows and in Safari.
Aliases. Proton Pass creates a disposable email alias (SimpleLogin technology) in the same click as the password. For anyone who signs up to many services, this is the single most useful feature neither Bitwarden nor NordPass Free offers. NordPass lists email masks only in its Business plans, so personal users get no alias feature at all.
2FA codes in the vault. Proton Pass Plus fills the TOTP code right after the password. It is convenient, and it also helps against look-alike phishing pages because autofill only triggers on the real domain. We still keep banking and email codes in a separate authenticator app or on a hardware key, with either manager.
Sharing. Proton Pass shares vaults or single items, with 2 people on the free plan. NordPass sharing is clean but Premium only.
Ecosystem. If you use Proton Mail or Proton VPN, Pass lives in the same account and Proton Unlimited (9.99 EUR/month) bundles all of it. If you use NordVPN, Nord's bundles do the same for NordPass. Ecosystem is a legitimate tiebreaker: one subscription, one support desk.
06 - Prices in 2026, Checked at the Source
| Plan | Price | Billed | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Pass Free | 0 | proton.me, 18 Oct 2026 | |
| Proton Pass Plus | 2.99 EUR/month | 35.88 EUR/year (4.99 EUR month to month) | proton.me, 17 Oct 2026 |
| Proton Pass Family (6) | 4.99 EUR/month | 59.88 EUR/year | proton.me, 17 Oct 2026 |
| Proton Unlimited | 9.99 EUR/month | 119.88 EUR/year, includes Pass Plus | proton.me, 17 Oct 2026 |
| NordPass Free | 0 | nordpass.com, 17 Oct 2026 | |
| NordPass Premium, 2 years | 1.39 EUR/month | 37.53 EUR for 27 months, then 80.73 EUR | nordpass.com, 17 Oct 2026 |
| NordPass Premium, 1 year | 1.99 EUR/month | 23.88 EUR first year, then 35.88 EUR | nordpass.com, 17 Oct 2026 |
| NordPass Family (6), 2 years | 2.49 EUR/month | nordpass.com, 17 Oct 2026 | |
| NordPass Family (6), 1 year | 3.69 EUR/month | nordpass.com, 17 Oct 2026 |
Two things to read correctly. First, NordPass's headline price is a first-term price: after 27 months the 2-year plan renews at 80.73 EUR, and the 1-year plan renews at 35.88 EUR, which is exactly Proton Pass Plus's yearly price. Second, Proton's price buys more extras than NordPass Premium in the same tier (unlimited aliases, Proton Sentinel, built-in authenticator), while NordPass Premium's extras are the ones a mainstream user expects (breach scanner, health report, sharing, file attachments). Compare on what you will use, not on the first invoice alone.
07 - Which One Should You Pick?
You will not pay, or not yet → Proton Pass. The free plan has no device limit and no item limit, and you can add Plus later without migrating anything.
You want the best polish for a few euros and you will pay anyway → NordPass Premium on the 2-year plan. Lowest first-term price of the two, cleanest autofill, 30-day refund if the UX does not suit you.
You sign up to many services and hate spam → Proton Pass. Aliases at signup time are the feature you will use daily.
You want open-source clients you can read → Proton Pass.
You already use NordVPN, or you want everything from one vendor with one support desk → NordPass, ideally in a Nord bundle.
A family of up to 6 → NordPass Family is cheaper per year on the 2-year plan; Proton Pass Family adds unlimited aliases and Sentinel to every member. Price-first, NordPass; feature-first, Proton.

Both import from each other and from every major manager (LastPass, 1Password, Dashlane, Bitwarden, Chrome, Firefox, Safari) via CSV or the vendor's native export.
- Export your current vault (NordPass: Settings, Export items; Proton Pass: Settings, Export, choose unencrypted CSV or the encrypted PGP file).
- Create the new account with a long master password, 16 characters or a 5-word passphrase.
- Import (Proton Pass: Settings, Import; NordPass: Settings, Import passwords) and check ten random logins.
- Turn on 2FA for the new account before anything else.
- Delete the exported CSV from your disk and from the trash. It is plaintext.
Plan 30 minutes. Passkeys do not travel through CSV exports yet, so expect to re-register passkeys on the sites you use them with; our guide on moving passkeys between password managers explains the current state.
09 - Honest Cons of Both
Proton Pass
- The built-in authenticator is paid; the free plan does not fill TOTP codes.
- The server is not open source, only the clients.
- Fewer years in production than NordPass; some edge cases in autofill on older sites.
- No encrypted file storage on the free plan.
NordPass
- One active device on the free plan makes it a trial, not a free manager.
- Proprietary clients; you trust the audits rather than the code.
- Renewal price of the 2-year plan (80.73 EUR) is more than double the first term.
- No email aliases and no built-in authenticator in personal plans; sharing is Premium only.

Frequently asked questions
Proton Pass vs NordPass: which free plan is better?
**Proton Pass Free** is the more complete free plan in 2026: unlimited logins, notes and cards, **unlimited devices**, passkeys, 10 hide-my-email aliases, 2 vaults and sharing with 2 people (proton.me/pass/pricing, checked 18 October 2026). **NordPass Free** also has an unlimited vault, a generator, TOTP 2FA for your account and passkeys, but it syncs on **one active device at a time**: you can switch devices, not use phone and laptop together. If you want a free manager you will keep for years, Proton Pass. If you want to test NordPass on one computer before paying, its free plan is enough for that.
Is NordPass or Proton Pass more secure?
Both use zero-knowledge encryption: the vault is encrypted on your device and the provider never holds the key. **Proton Pass** encrypts each item with AES-256-GCM using a random 32-byte key, protects keys with OpenPGP (ECC Curve25519), publishes its audit reports and runs a public bug bounty. **NordPass** uses XChaCha20 with Argon2id key derivation, published a Cure53 audit in 2022 and holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification. Neither has had a reported vault breach. The practical difference is transparency: Proton Pass clients are open source (GPL v3), NordPass clients are proprietary. For a strong master password, both are state of the art.
Proton Pass vs NordPass: what do they cost in 2026?
**Proton Pass Plus**: 2.99 EUR/month billed yearly, 35.88 EUR/year, or 4.99 EUR month to month (proton.me, 17 October 2026). **Proton Pass Family**: 4.99 EUR/month yearly (59.88 EUR/year) for 6 people. **NordPass Premium**: 1.39 EUR/month on the 2-year plan (37.53 EUR for the first 27 months, then 80.73 EUR at renewal) or 1.99 EUR/month on the 1-year plan (23.88 EUR the first year, then 35.88 EUR). **NordPass Family**: 2.49 EUR/month (2 years) or 3.69 EUR/month (1 year) for 6 users (nordpass.com/plans, 17 October 2026). NordPass is cheaper for the first term; at renewal the 1-year plans cost the same (35.88 EUR).
Do Proton Pass and NordPass support passkeys?
Yes, both store and sync passkeys on every platform, and both include passkeys in their **free** plans (checked 18 October 2026 on proton.me and nordpass.com/features). Proton Pass added passkeys in April 2024, NordPass in 2024 as well. If you want your passkeys outside the Apple or Google ecosystem, either works; Proton Pass does it on unlimited free devices, NordPass Free on one active device.
Can NordPass or Proton Pass generate my 2FA codes?
**Proton Pass** has a built-in authenticator in Pass Plus (not in the free plan): the TOTP code is stored next to the login and filled automatically. **NordPass** supports TOTP 2FA to protect your NordPass account, but the NordPass Authenticator is not included in the Free, Premium or Family plans (nordpass.com/plans, 18 October 2026); it is listed for Business plans. Whichever manager you use, we recommend keeping email and banking codes in a separate app or a hardware key, so a stolen master password does not expose both factors at once.
